Term 2 Week 1

Welcome back to Term 2! We have had a fantastic start back to the term. The Preps are all settled back into school routines and eager for more exciting learning. On the first day back the students were very excited to discover the Easter Bunny had been during the holiday and delivered an egg into their Easter baskets they had made on the last day of term .

On the last day of term the students were given a special brown paper bag to collect three items during the holidays to bring in to share with the class. On the first day back the students shared their 'holiday bags' with a buddy. It was interesting hearing about all the things they had done during the holidays. The movie tickets, football tickets, photos were great reminders to help the students to share their holiday fun. They then used these items to write a recount about three special things they did in the holidays.

For one of our Writing sessions this week we had a look at Autumn leaves and trees. We read a poem about Autumn. We then described Autumn time. We published our first piece of writing to go up onto the wall. Come into the classroom and see our Autumn tree with our excellent Writing!

Happy Easter!

Congratulations preps you have survived your very first term at school and deserve a holiday! You have done so well, settling in, making friends, having fun and doing lots of learning! The term went so fast!  During our last week we went on a tour around the school and had a look at the Stations of the Cross. Each class created one of the stations. We learnt about the events of Holy Week.

We had a fun last day of Term 1 hopping like an Easter bunny, describing what a bunny look likes and creating our own Easter baskets. I wonder if the Easter bunny will come into school in the holidays!!

Thank-you so much to the parents who have helped in the classroom this term. You have been fantastic! Thank-you for your continued support with helping your child reading at home, practising golden words and alphabet letters and sounds.

It was great meeting with you for parents evening, thank-you for coming along.

Have a restful, enjoyable Easter break see you in Term 2-Monday 13th April.

A few Literacy snaps from the end of term 1

We are fantastic Writers! I love the way Prep J are now having a go at their Writing independently. You are stars! We are still practising our Golden sight words. Remember to practise at home with your cards, writing and reading them!

St Patrick's day!

On Tuesday 17th March we celebrated St Patrick's day at school. We had a fun day making and eating green jelly, dancing like a leprechaun and making our very own shamrock men with our buddies. We were 'Shamrocking!'

Are you a bucket filler?

For part of our Inquiry unit we have been learning about how we best learn in our learning community. We have looked at what we can do in our learning community to ensure everyone feels happy. We read the book 'Have you filled a bucket today' by Carol McCloud and discussed how we want to be bucket fillers. We don't want to be a bucket dipper(someone who doesn't do/say kind things). We have our very own, special buckets hanging across our classroom. Every time we are spotted saying/doing something nice-being a bucket filler we get to put a bucketfiller certificate into our buckets. We will then get to take our buckets home at the start of next term and share them with our families! We can be a bucket filler by.. saying kind words, listening, sharing, helping, being kind, taking turns, being polite, including others and many other ways.

Food for life walk-a-thon

On Friday 13th March it was 'Walking together for Caritas day'. We came to school with some purple or orange on. We started our day outside for a whole school Liturgy. We then all walked around the oval once. This was our first lap! We then came back later in the morning and walked for half an hour around the oval with our buddies. We had to count how many laps we had done to tell the people sponsoring us. Our buddies joined us in our classroom in the afternoon and we looked at a story about living in Harmony. We then thought about what we can do to live in Harmony at Holy Family School. We also made a special balloon to take home to celebrate Harmony day. The school community raised a total of $6,340. They money will go to support Caritas.

We have been learning our days of the week in the correct order. You can practise at home using this video!

We read the story 'The very hungry Caterpillar' and ordered what the caterpillar ate using the days of the week. We created our very own hungry caterpillar that is hanging across our classroom. Here is a photo of some of the children holding the giant caterpillar while listening to the story!

Me Bags

On Tuesday 3rd March the students brought in their 'Me Bags'-3 items from home to share and discuss in groups at school. This was for our Inquiry unit 'Our Learning Community. We were discovering more about how we are unique and have something to contribute to our learning community. The students brought in photos, pictures and their favourite toys to share. After sharing their items the students then worked with a buddy to complete a venn diagram-'About us' They compared the similarities &differences between their items&their buddies. Well done you did a fantastic job!!
